Under this project, dedicated family planning corners will be set up in the premises of the BKMEA member factories, where specialist doctors and nurses will train the master trainers to impart information such as family planning, health awareness, and hygiene among the workers.
Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, Director, BKMEA, has said, “There is no doubt that workers are the main driving force of the labor-intensive knitwear industry, where about 80 percent are women workers. So, Family planning is an essential consideration for BKMEA to make the knitwear industry more productive. Bangladesh has already earned the status of a developing country. Therefore, the knitwear industry can play a significant role in getting on the list of developed countries in the shortest possible time in coming days”. Md. Akhter Hossain Apurbo, Director, BKMEA, has said, “Many women workers in our factories do not know things like family planning which indirectly affects production.”
In the discussion, they have mentioned that BKMEA has been continuously conducting various projects, like ‘Nutrition of Working Women’, ‘Lactating Mother Support Scheme’ for breastfeeding mothers, ‘Free Eye Care’ for workers, ‘TB Control Program’ for tuberculosis, ‘Awareness Campaign for Women’s Workers’ on mental hygiene of workers, with the support of various governmental and non-governmental organizations to protect the health of workers including Garment Workers Ministerial Hygiene Management. Senior officials from BKMEA and Pathfinder International, among others, were participated in the signing ceremony.
